Top Technical Skills for Chemical Engineer 2025

Top Technical Skills for Chemical Engineer 2025:- Hello chemical engineers, welcome to this article. Today we are going to cover the top skill or trending skill that a chemical engineer should have to get a high-paid job as per the current market scenario. I am a chemical engineer with 15 years of experience, and in the last 15 years, I have worked in the pharmaceutical, specialty chemicals, refinery, and oil and gas industries. Right now, chemical engineers have very, very high demand in all chemical engineering fields, whether it be the chemical sector, oil and gas sector, food sector, pharmaceutical sector, or fertilizer sector too. But based on market requirements and value in terms of money or package, today I am going to tell the top industries as well as the required skills to get placed in that industry.

This article is based on my research and my experience. For reference, I have searched for jobs on top recruiting sites like Naukri.com and LinkedIn. I have also discussed with my friends from similar fields, and based on that, I am going to share the Top Technical Skills for Chemical Engineer in 2025.

Top Technical Skills for Chemical Engineer 2025

lest start the discussion on main content.

Process Design and Simulation

Number one trending skill is “Process Design and Simulation.” I have checked the job descriptions for the oil and gas industry, refinery, fertilizer, and chemical sectors from top companies. The top skill I found everywhere is “Process Design and Simulation” using different software.

The most demanding software is “Aspen HYSYS.” Aspen HYSYS can be used in oil and gas, including downstream, upstream, and midstream operations. You can check on Naukri with the keyword “Aspen HYSYS job for chemical engineers,” and you will see lots of openings there. Aspen Plus is mostly used in the chemical industry.

The second most popular software is HTRI. HTRI is primarily used for the design and simulation of heat exchangers, especially shell and tube heat exchangers.

If you don’t know how to use Aspen or HTRI, please comment with your email ID in the comment box below, and I will share some guidelines that you can use for Aspen and HTRI simulations. This will also help you crack interviews, even if you don’t have hands-on experience with these tools.

Apart from Aspen, other simulation software includes ChemCAD, DWSIM, and ChemPro.

I will cover a separate article where I will share detailed information about each software required for chemical engineers, along with their specific applications.

The chances of getting a job if you have this skill are 70%. The chances of getting a high salary are very, very high in this case.

Check here some Job for chemical engineer with skill Aspen Hysys.

Process and Instrumentation Diagram

If you want to work in production, research, design, or project management industry, it is a must for every chemical engineer to have detailed knowledge about “Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID).”

But chances of getting higher payment with only this skill are very low. In some industries, there is a draftsman or a P&ID design engineer there to draft or construct the P&ID. For draftsman, it is not necessary to have a chemical engineer. With the help of a senior chemical engineer, a draftsman can draft it.

For the production engineer, it will be good or advantageous if they have detailed knowledge about it. If you are working in the production department, please check your P&ID or try to draft one yourself so you get a bold knowledge about the process.

Data Analytics or Data Science

The new demanding skill is data analysis. Data analysis is the future in every industry. It is a non-technical job, but a person with a background in chemical engineering can do it better. I am talking about data science jobs in the chemical engineering field only, not in other fields. You can do lots of data science courses to gain this skill.

Material Balance and Energy Balance

Material balance and energy balance are key skills. With the help of material balance, you can find out production capacity as well as equipment capacity. Energy balance is also important to calculate energy requirements and perform line sizing. Also, in costing, it is necessary to consider the cost of energy in operation.

Line Sizing and Pressure Drop Calculation

Line sizing and pressure drop calculation is one of the top demanding skills. As a chemical engineer, you should have the ability to determine the required line sizing as per process requirements and also know how to calculate pressure drops. I have already published a separate article on it; please read it, technical skills for chemical engineer.

Line Sizing Calculation With Example

Project Management

Almost all types of chemical industries have project scope. To manage projects in the oil and gas industry or chemical sector, having some project management skills will be an advantage for you. You can do PMP certification if you have a budget of around 50 to 100K Indian rupees. Additionally, you can take courses on Microsoft Project Management. Google Project Management is also available.

Key Skills for Chemical Engineer

Some top and key skills for a chemical engineer include budget preparation, technical clearance for quotes, GA drawing approval, follow-up with vendors, creation of bar charts, vendor handling, inspection of equipment, material management, document management, and recording the process design data.

If you want specific skills with respect to industry and job title, please mention the job title and industry in the comment box, such as “Oil and Gas Downstream Industry” and “Process Design Engineer,” so I can share the required skills. Please comment with your email ID.

Computer Skills for Chemical Engineer

The top Computer Skills for Chemical Engineer are. (Non technical)

Project Management Software

Project Management Software like Microsoft Project which is important for project planning.

Microsoft Excel

It is needed for project management to perform calculations using formulas. Many industries have developed their Excel sheets for these calculations. Therefore, it is very important to have knowledge about them.

Microsoft Word

This is required to create documents and reports.

Microsoft PowerPoint

To create presentations, especially to show reports.

Microsoft Outlook and Teams

For email management and communication.

Conclusion

As per the current market conditions (2024-2025) and predictions for the next 10 years, there will be a very high demand for chemical engineers in the oil and gas sector as well as the chemical sector. A lot of people are opting to become computer engineers or IT engineers in the current situation, so there are significantly fewer chemical engineers compared to other fields. In many institutes, seats for chemical engineering remain vacant.

You have a very high chance of getting a job with a higher package. To achieve this, you should develop skills (key skills for chemical engineer) like simulation using different software, knowledge of P&ID, PFD, material balance, energy balance, line sizing and pressure drop, and project management. i hope you enjoyed article on “Top Technical Skills for Chemical Engineer 2025”
